GROW POTATOES ORGANICALLY: FROM SOIL TO TABLE

GROW POTATOES ORGANICALLY
🥔  Few crops are as satisfying as digging into the soil and uncovering homegrown potatoes. They’re productive, versatile and easy to grow organically in garden beds, raised beds or large containers. 🌱 START WITH SEED POTATOES Plant certified disease-free seed potatoes rather than supermarket potatoes, which may carry disease or be treated to inhibit sprouting. Allow short, sturdy shoots to develop before planting. Large seed potatoes can be cut into pieces with healthy eyes; let cut surfaces dry before planting. 🌿 PREPARE THE SOIL Potatoes prefer loose, fertile, well-drained soil rich in organic matter. A slightly acidic pH of about 5–6.5 suits them. Work mature compost into the bed, but avoid fresh manure and excessive nitrogen, which can encourage leaves rather than tubers. Plant about 10–15 cm deep and 30 cm apart, with rows around 60–75 cm apart. ☀️ SUN, WATER & MULCH Choose a position with at least six hours of sun. Keep soil consistently moist, particularly while tubers are forming, but avoid waterlogging. Irregular watering can contribute to misshapen or cracked potatoes. Mulch with straw, leaves or other clean organic material to conserve moisture, suppress weeds and protect tubers from sunlight. ⛰️ HILL THEM UP As plants grow, gradually mound soil or compost around the stems. “Hilling” keeps developing potatoes covered and helps prevent greening. Green potato tissue can contain elevated glycoalkaloids and should not be eaten. 🐞 MANAGE PESTS NATURALLY Rotate potatoes with unrelated crops to reduce soil-borne pest and disease problems. Avoid repeatedly planting potatoes in the same bed or immediately after tomatoes, eggplants or capsicums, which belong to the same plant family. 🥔 HARVEST TIME For tender “new potatoes”, carefully harvest once tubers reach a useful size. For storage potatoes, allow foliage to yellow and die back, then lift the crop gently with a garden fork. Let mature potatoes dry briefly in a shaded, ventilated place. Store them somewhere cool, dark and dry. 💚 WHY EAT POTATOES? Potatoes are more nutritious than their reputation suggests. They provide carbohydrate for energy, vitamin C, potassium and vitamin B6, plus some fibre, particularly when the skin is eaten. Preparation matters. Boiled, steamed, baked or roasted potatoes can be part of a nutritious diet without large amounts of added salt or saturated fat. 🌍 WHY GROW ORGANIC? Organic growing reduces reliance on synthetic pesticides. Compost and mulch recycle organic matter, improve soil structure, conserve water and support soil organisms. Potatoes can produce plenty of food from a small area. Few gardening experiences beat digging up dinner! 🌱 Healthy soil. Healthy plants. A bucket full of potatoes.
