HOW TO GROW CARROTS ORGANICALLY — AND ENJOY THE BENEFITS

🥕 HOW TO GROW CARROTS ORGANICALLY — AND ENJOY THE BENEFITS

Carrots are among the most rewarding vegetables to grow organically. Packed with nutrients, naturally sweet and wonderfully versatile, they thrive in healthy soil and can provide fresh harvests for much of the year.

🌱 CHOOSING YOUR VARIETIES

Carrots come in more colours than orange! Purple, yellow, red and white varieties offer different flavours and beneficial plant compounds.

Nantes carrots are sweet and cylindrical, Chantenay varieties suit heavier soils, and Imperator types produce long, slender roots. Shorter varieties are ideal for containers and shallow garden beds.

🌿 PREPARING THE SOIL

Carrots grow best in loose, deep, well-drained soil free of stones and hard clumps. Choose a sunny position and incorporate mature compost well before planting.

Avoid fresh manure and excessive nitrogen, which can encourage forked, hairy or misshapen roots.

🥕 SOWING & GROWING

Carrots dislike transplanting, so sow seeds directly into the garden.

Plant seeds approximately 5–10 mm deep in shallow rows. Keep the soil consistently moist during germination, which can take one to three weeks.

Once seedlings emerge, thin them to approximately 5–8 cm apart. Crowded carrots produce smaller roots.

Sow successive crops every few weeks during suitable growing conditions for a continuous harvest.

💧 WATERING & FEEDING

Water regularly and deeply, especially during early growth. Irregular watering can cause roots to split.

Apply light organic mulch to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Carrots generally need little additional fertiliser when grown in fertile soil. Avoid excessive nitrogen.

🐞 ORGANIC PEST MANAGEMENT

Rotate crops and encourage beneficial insects by planting flowering herbs nearby.

Watch for aphids, caterpillars and carrot fly where present. Fine insect netting can protect vulnerable crops.

Remove weeds carefully to avoid disturbing developing roots.

🥕 HARVESTING

Most carrots mature within 60–100 days, depending on variety and conditions.

Harvest when roots reach their desired size. Loosen the soil before lifting to avoid breaking them.

Remove the leafy tops before storing, as they draw moisture from the roots. Refrigerate unwashed carrots in suitable containers to maintain freshness.

💚 NUTRITIONAL BENEFITS

Carrots are rich in beta-carotene, which the body converts into vitamin A to support normal vision, immunity and skin health.

They also provide fibre, potassium, vitamin K and antioxidant plant compounds. Purple carrots contain anthocyanins, while red varieties may provide lycopene.

🥗 RAW OR COOKED?

Raw carrots provide crunch and fibre, while gentle cooking softens their cell walls and makes beta-carotene easier to absorb.

Adding a little olive oil, avocado or another healthy fat improves carotenoid absorption.

Steaming or roasting helps retain flavour and nutrients without excessive water loss.

Growing carrots organically builds healthy soil, reduces reliance on synthetic pesticides and provides nutritious food straight from your garden.

Healthy soil, colourful roots and better nutrition — all from one tiny seed! 🥕🌱
